Pharmacists in Spain are different to the UK in that they are both qualified and happy to give certain medical advice. If you have any minor medical queries feel free to discuss them with the pharmacist. If she is unable to help she will refer you on to a doctor (see Health Centre).
There are two pharmacists in Orgiva. As neither of them speaks English please contact us if you require any assistance.
One pharmacy is located at the top of town next to the Health Centre, its opening times and phone numbers are displayed in the window.
The other one is situated at Calle Granada 1, on the main square (Plaza Alpujarra).
Its telephone/fax number is 958 784405.
It's opening hours are:
Both pharmacies will process prescriptions, usually without having to wait.
If you are resident and paying social security in Spain, your prescription will automatically contain your social security number. In that case you may not have to pay depending on whether you are a pensioner or incapacitated due to ill health, in which case the prescriptions are free; otherwise you will have to pay up to 40 % of the total cost of the prescription.
If you can supply an E111 (shortly to become obsolete) or the new EHIC, the pharmacist will provide you with a receipt when you pay for your prescription. Upon your return to the UK you can apply for these costs to be reimbursed.
Be aware that if the prescription is for a psychotropic medication, the
person buying it, not the person the medication is intended for, will be
required to give the Passport / NIE number. These medications are marked
on the box either with a
or a
symbol.
In addition to the above please be aware that you can also obtain jars of baby food and powdered milk for babies.
It is important to note that this is to be regarded as an emergency service not to be treated lightly. The times for this are as follows:
The two pharmacies alternate this service on a weekly basis. This information will be posted in the window of both to indicate the duty pharmacist.
The out of hours mobile telephone number for the pharmacist located in Calle Granada 1 is 669561734.
Recycling out of date, unused and old medications, will help the environment and will ensure you do not take any medication which may be harmful for your health. For this reason some pharmacies have a recycling point. The paper, cardboard and glass are recycled in the normal way, but the actual medication is recycled to provide electricity.
The pharmacy located in Calle Granada 1 has a recycling point where you can deposit the unwanted medicines.
If you require any assistance with any of the above, SOLVE is happy to act as an Interpreter/ Translator at the standard rate. Please contact us for further information.
