The school provides teaching for children aged 3 to 5 years old (Pre-school) and 6 to 12 years old (Primary school). Each year will be divided into 2 or 3 classrooms, depending on the number of children for that particular age on a particular year.
In the case of the Primary school it is then divided into cycles: 1st cycle being years 1 and 2; 2nd cycle being years 3 and 4 and the 3rd cycle being years 5 and 6. Depending on the child's Primary school results, he/she may be asked to stay another year in the same class to allow the child to catch up. A child is only allowed to repeat only once in each cycle and will then be moved to the next year regardless of the results.
Parents are encouraged to make appointments with the teacher(s) to be kept up to date of their child's progress. Appointments with the teacher or any other member of staff like the doctor, psychologist, etc, should be made on Monday for the following day and will take place between 17:00 and 18:00.
There is an external team to help the students with their grasp of Spanish. An external teacher will come round twice weekly to teach Spanish to those students who may need it. The resident English teacher will also help.
There is another external team of doctors, psychologists, speech therapist, etc who come round twice a week to do a follow up of any students that may need it. The student's tutor may ask one or more members of the team to check up on a student if he/she thinks it appropriate and parents / tutor will be asked for permission first.
The dentist also goes round the Primary School every 15 days to do a check up and to (with the parent's authorisation) give fluoride to the students. In the 1st and 5th year of Primary, there is a health check up of sight, mouth, hearing, weight, height, vaccinations (with the parents authorisation), etc.
If you are worried about anything in particular, for instance dyslexia, please don't hesitate to raise this at an early stage, as help is available from the team.
There is a canteen where children can have lunch and also school transport is available. Both are free for children who live further than 3 Kilometres from the school. Parents who live less than 3 Kilometres from school and want their children to use the canteen and the bus, can still apply for a place, although whether a place is given or not will depend on the parents income.
In both cases a form (available for the school) has to be filled in and handed in at the school. Please pay particular attention to the closing date when renewing your application. Refer to school secretary.
June to September
Note: If required, parents can drop their Pre-school child at 09:00. For example if they have another child of older age who arrives to school earlier; or the parents work.
October to June (Both schools)
Note: If your child has school meals on Monday or Tuesday, he/she will remain at school for the full day.
Although no child will be left without a place, the official time to reserve a place is throughout de month of March. The reason for this is that the school needs to know how many teachers it will need for the next year and to request more teachers if needed from the regional government.
The documentation required to register your child is as follows:
A number of excursions have either been arranged or have been asked for, for the current year.
Excursions which are already arranged are:

08:30 - 14:30 all year. Gates will be open from 08:20 till 08:35 and any student arriving later must bring a note from their parents, otherwise the delay will be classified as unjustified. In any case, students who arrive late will not be able to join their class until next the period.
Public Holidays (2005 / 2006)
Parents will be informed in writing by the tutor about their child's absenteeism, every fifteen days in ESO and monthly in any of the other courses. Justification for absenteeism will have to be made either with an official document (available from the school) or with a note from the parents, together with a signed photocopy of the parent's DNI / NIE / Passport. Absenteeism is penalized and when it accumulates, it must be reported to Social Services.
It is demanded of all teaching community, parents and students to behave in a correct manner when treating others. When students' behaviour is deemed inappropriate, they will be reprimanded verbally. In cases of repeat offences the procedure detailed below will be followed by the teachers.
Students are not allowed to have objects at the school such as mobile phones, video games or music players which may distract them. Also, they must not possess, while at the school, any dangerous, annoying, or inappropriate objects.
Students will only be able to leave the centre during school hours with a written authorisation from their parents or tutors and the signed permit from the school tutor.
At the beginning of each term, these activities will be approved. Parents have to agree for their child to go on these activities and some of them may incur a charge to pay, for example, for transport, entrance fees, etc.
Examples of some of those extra curricular activities are:
There is an external medical team which will deal with the particular issues that may appear during the scholar year. They visit the centre regularly and keep close contact with the "orientador", a psychologist, who works full time at the college and whose job is to counsel students in all aspects of their student life and who at the tutor's behest will check up / keep an eye on a child. However all this is done with the parents' full agreement.
There is also a team to help foreign students to cope with the new language. They help during school hours and provide one extra hour per week to learn the Spanish language. There is a teacher whose job is to help those students and who is also assisted by a number of other teachers from the school.
There is a medical check-up of all students of 2nd year of ESO. There is also a youth surgery: A doctor from the Health Centre comes round every week to deal with any problems related to the young.
It is important to note that it is forbidden to have or consume alcoholic beverages, tobacco or any other substances.
To ask for an appointment with one of the child's teachers or anyone else, please phone 958 784 666, or pop in to the school. Two hours a week are allotted for the parents to speak to the teacher. Times may vary depending on the teacher's timetable, although these are communicated to the parents at the beginning of the school year. It is helpfull for the parents to tell the teacher / tutor in advance in order for him/her to be able to collect any relevant information.
Details for the different grants, scholarships, how to apply for them for the following year and the deadlines, are posted throughout the school. A form, available at the school office, must be filled in and handed back before the above mentioned deadlines. These deadlines may change from year to year, but they are normally from July to the end of September.
ESO students can be picked up from a radius comprising Padre Eterno, Soportujar, Cañar, Las Barreras and Tíjola and it is free. Bachillerato students can be picked up as far as Lanjarón and Pitres although since it is not compulsory to attend school at this stage, transport is not free.
Obligatory Secondary Education ( ESO ). This normally starts in the school year the student has his/her 12th birthday, it will last 4 years, and will normally finish once the student is 15. It will provide the basic elements of the student's culture; develop the student to be able to exercise his/her rights and responsibilities as a citizen; and to prepare the student for bachillerato or vocational school (GNVQ).
If the student does not have good enough grades in more than three subjects, he/she will have to repeat the year; this will be for one year only and he/she will be automatically promoted to the next year. If the student does not have good enough grades in one or two subjects, he/she will be allowed to progress to the next year but will have to also carry the failed subject(s).
Subjects studied include: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, History, and P.E. amongst others.

Bachillerato. This is the last stage of the secondary education; it is voluntary, lasting 2 years and is normally completed when the student is between the ages of 16 and 18. The goals of bachillerato are to develop the student to strive to a greater personal and intellectual maturity; to give a good grounding towards further studies whether university or vocational and to help him/her to be able to acquire a greater range of knowledge and abilities.
This could roughly be compared to English A levels and likewise are recognised as entry qualifications for British universities.
For a student to be able to progress to the second year, he/she must have had good grades in all of the first year's subjects, although a maximum of two of those subjects can be failed. In this case he/she will carry those subjects on to the next year which means this student will have one or two more subjects to study than anyone else who passed all subjects the previous year. If the student does not have good grades in three or more subjects he/she will have to repeat the whole year, which also applies to finishing the second year.
The student can choose one of the following four disciplines: Social sciences, engineering sciences, health sciences or humanities.
There are a few subjects which are common to all disciplines such as: Spanish language and literature, foreign language, philosophy, Religion, P.E. and History. Apart from these, there are a number of other subjects which revolve around the chosen discipline.
Ciclos Formativos. These are vocational courses for those students who decide to take a different career path.
These are divided between: Tourism Marketing Higher Diploma; Administrative Management Lower degree; Electric Equipments and Installations Lower Degree.
All students will have a tutor allocated to them, whom will advise them about their learning process. At the beginning of the course the tutors' timetables will be published.
Throughout the year and for each subject, there will be three tests, one per term, which the student will have to do at the college and will be written. Also, there will be two final tests, one in June which will cover the whole of the studied material and another in September for those subjects failed in June.
